That little white speck is us on Cadence under sail in New York Harbor. We had a wonderful sail yesterday with our friends, Rob and Colleen. We left Perth Amboy at 1120 in light winds, motoring and sailing under the Verazzano by 1415 and into New York Harbor.
We ran wing-on-wing across the harbor, up the Hudson to Chelsea Piers (23rd Street). NY Harbor is very choppy at the entrance to the Hudson and there is a lot of traffic so it was challenging as well as spectacular.
We then beat South, tack on tack all the way through the harbor, close-hauled in a nice breeze down the Hudson tacking from the Hoboken side to downtown Manhattan.
The Tall Ships were in town for Opsail 2012. We saw Eagle and few others in the distance but sadly not up close.
We came down the west side of the harbor, past Ellis Island and The Statue of Liberty (the shot below is evidence!). To The South of Liberty State Park is Port Liberte where my friend and fellow sailing blogger Stuart Hochron from News From The Bow lives. I called him as we sailed past. He looked out his window and took the shot above. If you squint you can see us waving.
The sail home across Raritan Bay doesn’t get much better – 12kts of breeze on a close reach with a sunset over Staten Island that Hawaii would have been proud of.
Yesterday was indeed a fine day to sail. Unfortunately, time commitments due to a picnic later in the day, prevented us from making it out of Jamaica Bay. Our three best sails over the past two years have been or most recent tree over the past three weeks. We have been enjoying some great weekend wind and weather, haven’t we?
Wonderful. I am beginning to understand the attractions of a boat bigger than a Laser.
John: So far it has the makings of a great summer.
TMan: I am a fraud. These are all photoshopped. I spent the weekend on the mooring fixing the engine
Though your trip had to end that fast, all in all, it’s still AMAZING! Adventurous individuals of all ages engage in boating activities, and having the weather on your side is a must. Also, we need to make sure that every part of the boat is in good condition because it plays a vital role in helping you enjoy the whole boating experience. We are looking forward to your next get-away. Cheers!
