Maltese Falcon Tacking

As she came up to the start, Maltese Falcon tacked. Not surprisingly it’s a slow, complex but very impressive thing to watch as this sequence shows.

My friend, Patti and her husband Paul are navigator and tactician. They would have had their work cut out for them working out how to cross the line without mowing down a handful of spectator boats that unwisely had not cleared the start.

Big thanks to the guys from Phaedo and Gunboat for kindly providing the RIB.

  1. Great pictures. I have a question. All the pictures I have seen of the Wednesday start show the Maltese Falcon well away from all of the other boats starting. Did she actually have a separate start time, or was she just keeping well clear of all the usual start line mayhem because if her limited maneuverability?

  2. There were two starts on Weds. One for IRC2 and 3 plus the 2 Class 40s. They then had MF and Phaedo start about 20 minutes later with a longer start line. It was hectic!
