“The family and I have put all of our savings into this; we've sold our house,” said the former RCMP officer. “The first time around it was about the competition, I wanted to do well. Now I want to give back to Canada and represent Canada.”

This is true commitment. Hatfield was forced to abandon the Vendee when his boat was rolled and his spreaders collapsed. A real heart-breaker. You can read a bit more about this in this profile of Rich Wilson the US entrant in the Vendee.

The comments to the article are worth reading in themselves. Who would have thought that something as inspiring as this could be this controversial? 23 comments equally divided between cheering him on and calling him "a moron" (their words not mine). I am with the cheerers. Go for it Derek! It's your life mate.

Thanks to Scuttlebutt for pointing this out.
