It is true that I have always called my boat a “30-foot dinghy,” as it has no creature comforts. With no people visible in the picture, you can’t really tell how big Black Magic is. Pat was racing the single-hand Joshua Slocum regatta, and he had gone forward to deal with some lines that had tangled themselves — he’s behind the jib.
Usually the Etchells is crewed by three or four. Most of my solo sails of Carol Anne’s boat have been in “cruise” mode; this year’s Joshua Slocum race was the first time I’d tried to race the boat solo and the first time I’d put up the chute by myself in a nice bit of breeze. The solo spinnaker work was a bit of a challenge — let’s just say that the chute and I both survived without damage and I eventually got it to look good, but getting to that point took a while.
Luckily I never turned my sunfish into a ghost boat. I have come close before though! Have you seen the photo contest from Discover Boating? You should submit some of your stuff. Check http://bit.ly/bcGuf for the details.
Yeah, that’s my photo with my dad aboard my mom’s Etchells 22 Black Magic on Elephant Butte lake.
That’s very cool. I posted this as it appeared in a flickr photo stream gadget on my iGoogle. I had no idea it was you guys. What a small digital world we live in
ditched due to the economy?
