At our annual awards event last Saturday, one of the boats that won a number of awards, including most improved was called Dilligaff.
It sounded Welsh but I wondered about its origin. It was explained to me that it's an acronym: D.I.L.L.I.G.A.F.F. which stands for "Do I look like I give a flying f…."
The boat has kept its name though several owners. The previous owner was totally oblivious until his teenage daughter explained it to him.
Reminds me of a story I heard at the previous company I worked. The boss was at a trade show and a visitor to our stand asked him what a certain box did.
He said it was the HGFC unit and the visitor left happy.
No one had heard it called that so he was asked what the acronyms stood for. He said “Haven’t Got a F-ing Clue”.
I had the pleasure of sailing on the Dilligaff you refer to at Raritan YC a few years ago with its previous owner and it is one of the sweetest and well-maintained boats I have ever had the pleasure to board. Long may she continue to excel on the water and bring smiles to people’s faces when her name is mentioned!
