Song for Friday: Rio – Duran Duran

Can’t believe I didn’t play this one sooner. Simon leBon is quite the sailor and had a much publicized capsize in the Fastnet. Great video a boat actually sailing. Fancy that!

Here is one
from Michael from the movie Juno. It’s Fish and boats. A double whammy bonus for Friday

  1. I’m amazed as well that you’d never used this song/video. The Rio video had a major impact on music videos and MTV…before Rio music videos were cheap, cute performance things, usually shot on tape. Rio raised the stakes considerably with its high production values (as well as being fun).
(not in my Peconic Puffin bio: I am a former MTV executive.)
And as for Tree Hugger…I said to Adam that it covers both fish on Friday (given one of the key creatures in the song) and Song on Friday (though not a sailing song.) If the song is too cute for you, it’s all my fault.

  2. OMG!! Adam!!! Thank you for posting this!
I am a hard-core Duranie even to this day. I credit this video with being the first seed planted that led to eventually (20-some years later) calling myself a sailor.
With nostalgic warm fuzzies (and semi-scandalous thoughts of John Taylor),

  3. I’m sorry but I have to disagree with most of what is posted. While Rio is a very “Slick” video its pretty much devoid of substance. That makes it typical of the 80’s mainstream.
IMHO, the 80’s were a cultural low tide where looks ruled over content and this song/video is a perfect example. It looks great but its crap underneath.
