Great story from the BBC about a British yachtsman who suffered a bad fall 690 miles NE of Bermuda. He called his local pub for help on his Sat Phone, they called the Falmouth Coast Guard who got him rescued by the US Coast Guard.
Good looking pub too.
Hmmm. I know nothing about ocean cruising, sat phones or how to call the coastguard. But is this normal? If ever tempted to sail across the Atlantic alone, I kind of think I would have some emergency numbers in my phone other than my local pub.
and I bet they thought it was crank call at first. What the article didnt say is that he had to call them twice
“Speaking from his local, the Bull’s Head in Fishbourne, he said: ‘I took a tumble into the cabin from the cockpit.'”
Apparently his pub will only serve him orange juice now…
In this sailor’s humble opinion, Bermuda is home to some of *the most* gracious and engaging people on the planet. Add in the fact that they love to sail and to hoist a pint or whatnot, and what you’ve got is Nirvana, Xanadu, HEAVEN.
Great story!
