Passage to Greenport – Night Watch

0200: halfway through this late night watch. Motor-sailing with little wind. We are about 15 miles from Montauk Point where we will round and head Northwest towards Greenport.

I love these late night watches. I stay awake fueled by Red Bull and cookies, listening to “This American Life”.

Other than a tug and a small freighter, there is very little traffic. The tug was a little worrying as it got pretty close before we figured out that he was pushing a barge. The problem with night sailing so rarely is that we are unfamiliar with the light patterns so it takes us long to understand what other vessels are doing, who needs to give way, etc.

The stars are incredible. It’s one of those nights where you can see the clouds of stars between the bigger stars. The Milky Way is clear as a bell and the occasional shooting star.

OK back to keeping a lookout.
