If you cast your eyes left you will see a long selection of books for sailors. If a loved one is wondering what to get you for the holidays, here are some suggestions to email to Santa.
I have read most of them and will vouch for them all. I am reading the Celtic Ring right now. It's a little long and meandering but very good on sailing in Scotland.
Strongly recommend Bernard Cornwell's Widltrack for a ripping yarn and Robin Knox-Johnston's World of My Own, the classic on single-handed sailing.
Fatty Goodlander's yarns are wonderful. Honest accounts of life as a full-time cruisers. Fastnet Force 10 may be one of the best books ever written on sailing and my personal favorite is A Voyage for Madmen.
that’s a pretty long and impressive list – I was wondering if you’d read them all. I’m currently reading Pete Goss’s “Close to the Wind” (about 1/2 way done). I just requested the Fastnet Force 10 from my library – I’ll dive into that one next. thanks for the list and recommendations!
cheers, my2fish
Fastnet Force 10 is well worth the wait. It’s superb.
I have read most of them or they are on the pile next to my bed. I would recommend any of them each for totally different reasons.
Fastnet Force 10 was a good read. I just saw a documentary called Deep Water, which is about Donald Crowhurst. What a tragic tale. I wonder why he didn’t just run his boat aground or scuttle it? So now “A Voyage For Madmen” is on my list along with Sir Robin’s book.
Here are a few more books you might want to put on a list: “Sea Change” by Peter Nichols, “My Old Man And The Sea” by David and Daniel Hays, “Godforsaken Sea” by Derek Lundy, and “A Sea Vagabond’s World” by Bernard Moitessier, it was his last book.
Here’s another one for you: Trekka Round the World by John Guzzwell.
